Science for the kids; and adults
Whether it's hands-on or looking, science can be fascinating if it's done right. And Lancaster has two places that do it perfectly. The first of these is the
Lancaster Science Factory,
a place where hands-on is a byword. Would your kids like to build a bridge, launch a parachute, or create a rainbow? Great! But if not they can do experiments at over fifty exhibits in structural engineering, geometric patterns, fluid dynamics, air power and flight, conductors and insulators, logic and puzzles, mechanical systems, electricity, magnetism, light and vision, Newton's laws, and/or sound. If you're a whiz with this stuff you can help them have fun and learn; if you're not an expert the staff is, and they are readily available. We took our grandkids aged 9 to 14 and they had a ball; we had to drag them away after about two hours.
The second place is the
North Museum of Natural History and Science,
located on the campus of Franklin & Marshall College. Exhibits there include one about the local native peoples (the Susquehannocks), rocks and minerals, dinosaurs, space, birds, bugs, light and sight, live animals, and much more. Some exhibits are only for looking and other are hands-on. There is also a planetarium and a discovery room. I volunteered there for a while and I can assure you that both you and your children will find a visit very much to your liking.
