Four miscellaneous attractions to consider
There are four miscellaneous attractions that don't fit well into the other Just For Kids categories. The most unusual is the
Speedwell Forge Wolf Sancturary of PA.
Their brochure says, "(It) was established in 1980 to provide a home for displaced wolves. Today, we maintain 25 acres of free-range space for 40+ wolves, so they may live out their lives in a natural environment. In addition to caring for our wolves, we are dedicated to providing public education about the plight of the wolf, along with offering interactive experiences with the wolves and their culture."
And they do an excellent job in fulfilling their mission. You get up close (but very safely) from these definitely wild animals. How wild? The keepers are very careful, someone always has their back when they enter the pens; and the wolves maintain all their natural wariness and habits. One keeper has mastered the wolf call and if you're lucky on the day you visit they will answer him from all over the sanctuary - definitely one of those back to nature moments to remember. Note: If anyone in your family suffers from hayfever, don't go during the pollen season; there are acres of ragweed.
The Hands-on House Children's Museum
is as different from the wolf sanctuary as it could possibly be. It is a totally safe environment for children aged 2 to 10 learn about science and the world by "doing". We have not taken our somewhat older grandchildren there, but it has an excellent reputation and there are certainly many opportunities for your kids to have fun while learning.
The National Christmas Center
is fun for everyone. Although there is a gift shop (as always) that is NOT the focus; this is a museum depicting the many aspects of Christmas in fifteen galleries spread over more than 20,000 square feet. The galleries show Christmas as it is celebrated in countries around the world, at various decades in the U.S., and in early Pennsylvania German homes. Also shown are the First Christmas, Santa's Workshop, storybook themes, old-time stores, and many more. What, not going because you aren't in town during the Christmas season? Big mistake, this is an interesting attraction at any time of the year.
The last of the four miscellaneous attractions is Abe's Buggy Rides. It's mentioned in the section called An Amish Day Trip and you can get details on their web site by clicking on the picture to the right here. It's fun and informative to take a ride around Amish country and learn a little about their culture while you do, but even if you don't take a ride it's a chance to study a buggy up close, and there is a free petting zoo.
