Learn about the Amish

Do you want to learn about the Amish? You can, and it's both easy and fun. The best way to start may be by going to either the Mennonite Information Center or The Amish Experience. Although both are excellent, we prefer the Mennonite Information Center; it's run by people very close to the Old Order Amish culture and it's less expensive than our second choice.

It offers a number or interesting and informative services, including a thirty minute three-screen presentation called "Who are the Amish?" and a free seventeen minute film titled "Postcards from a Heritage of Faith" about Mennonite/Anabaptist history. The Center can also arrange for tours, lodging in Mennonite guest houses, and quilting seminars. In addition, if you're interested in researching Mennonite or Pennsylvania German history, genealogy, faith, art, or culture the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society is located in a building next door.

Our other choice to is The Amish Experience at the Plain & Fancy Farm, in particular the presentation called "Jacob's Choice" in the F/X Theater. It's a unique show that uses five screens and three-dimensional effects to give you the feeling that you're part of the presentation. In addition to "Jacob's Choice" the Plain & Fancy Farm also offers tours of an on-site Amish house, country and farm tours. It's all very well done, but unless you have a lot of time and money we don't recommend going to both The Mennonite Center and the Plain & Fancy Farm.
