Lancaster vacations. A great idea!
Lancaster vacations are great – at any time of the year. In the spring when everything seems fresh and vibrant, farmers are busy with planting, and the weather is pleasant (well, usually) after the snow and ice have melted. In the summer when the flowers are in bloom, farm fields are lush with produce, and the weather is wonderful (well, usually). In the fall when the harvest is in full swing, autumn leaves are glorious, and the weather is ideal (well, usually). Or even in the winter when most of the tourists are gone, trees are silhouetted against rolling hills and maybe some snow (sorry, but even Lancastrians can’t control the weather). But all joking aside, Lancaster has something to offer throughout the year, whatever your interests might be.

Lancaster County’s scenery varies from peaceful Amish farms to bustling towns, spectacular river views to rolling hills, farms to forests, and covered bridges to modern architecture. The Amish culture and people are fascinating to we "English", as they call us. Although some visitors, and locals, think their unique way of life might be fading away in the face of changing times, the Amish are a vibrant and growing community. Renowned for their farming skills, they are also well known for their high quality quilts, furniture, and building skills.
Entertainment? Lancaster's visitors and residents can choose from Broadway-quality live performances at our three theaters (the American Music Theater, the Fulton Opera House, and the Sight and Sound Theatre), three dinner theaters, the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra, a puppet theater, and several smaller theatrical companies. What else? Tours, paint ball, Dutch Wonderland (a children's amusement park owned and operated by the famous Hershey Park), and many, many other attractions.
Shopping here is excellent. It includes the country's oldest continuously operating farmer's market, two large outlet malls, a big shopping center, numerous strip malls, and countless stores. Prices are generally good, helped in part by Pennsylvania's lack of sales tax on clothing, food, drugs, textbooks, and resale items. In Lancaster city the area including north Queen and Prince Streets downtown is home to a thriving art scene. Numerous galleries dot the area and more are scattered throughout the county, along with shops specializing in handicrafts of many kinds.
Our heritage is nothing to sneeze at either. It includes the Susquehannock indians, settlement beginning in 1710, a one-day stint as the capital of the United States, active roles in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, home for President James Buchanan and Congressman Thaddeus Stevens, birthplace of Robert Fulton, and being a way station on the underground railroad. You could probably spend one of your Lancaster vacations doing nothing but just visiting the dozens of museums and historic sites dedicated to remembering our past.
And you can enjoy your stay at any of our fine hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and inns. Of course it goes without saying (but i will anyway) that there are countless fine restaurants serving food across the spectrum of cuisines, from Amish/Pennsylvania Dutch to Thai and contemporary.
Whether you have one or more Lancaster vacations you’ll discover why Lancaster County is one of America’s favorite destinations.
