Lancaster Lodging...
More than hotels & motels

On this page I'll address Lancaster lodging other than hotels and motels, specifically: B&Bs, campgrounds and cottages, Amish B&Bs, and Mennonite guest homes. The process of selecting these recommendations was very different from that used for hotels and motels.

Bed and Breakfasts

Let' start with the B&B sub-category of other Lancaster lodging. There are many Lancaster bed and breakfast places and I could think of only one way to determine which are best; use an independent web site that includes ratings by guests. The most useful I could find was iLoveInns.com. They don't show every B&B of course, but do list quite a few. After looking over the site I selected three places, each with at least ten customer reviews, and all scoring perfect fives on a five point scale. Once again, Joan and I have not stayed in any of them.

First on the list is The Inn & Spa at Intercourse Village, its picture is shown above. I listed it first only because it's one of the two accommodations in Lancaster County, in all categories, to earn the American Automobile Association's four diamond rating. The second place is the Australian Walkabout Inn, which also scores very high on the Expedia.com and Tripadvisor.com web sites. The third place is the Historic Smithton Inn. I think, no, I know there are many other fine B&Bs in the area but to try to identify them in any meaningful way would be difficult and extremely time consuming. If the three suggested here aren't to your liking I suggest reviewing the iLoveInns.com site and/or visiting your local book store.

Campgrounds and Cottages

Like B&Bs, I had a tough time trying to figure out which of the many campgrounds to recommend as alternative Lancaster lodging. And, once again, I chose to use one web site that rates them, RV ParkReviews.com. On there I selected the three highest rated sites in the county, all with scores of 4.35 or higher on a five point scale. All had at least eighteen reviews since January 2009. Some of them, as above for Lake-in-the-Wood Camping Resort, also have cottages for rent. The second and third places chosen are Beacon Hill Camping and Country Acres Campground. As with B&Bs, if you want more choices look at RVParkReviews.com or a campground directory such as Woodalls.

Amish and Mennonite Places

I've already suggested three elsewhere. You can find them on the navigation bar under Amish B&Bs or you can click here: Amish B&Bs. I've made no attempt to select or list any Mennonite guest homes. Instead, I'll just refer you to the folks at the Mennonite Information Center. The site doesn't list accommodations; you have to either visit the Center or contact them by phone.
