Lancaster food! Yummm...!!! What else can I say?:
The food in Lancaster is memorable. It's excellent, fresh, plentiful, and is well worth buying to eat here and/or to take home. What are our best kinds of food? That's a tough question to answer.
One of Lancaster's long-standing nicknames is "The garden spot of America" due to the soil and the expertise of our hard working farmers. The county has 6,000+ farms (99% are family owned) and is widely recognized as the most productive non-irrigated agricultural county in the country. We produce nearly 20% of the state's total agricultural output, and the county's farmers always win the lion's share of awards at the annual State Farm Show in Harrisburg.
Our fresh produce includes: corn (perhaps the most popular vegetable), green beans, yellow beans, lima beans, cabbage, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, squash, zucchini, pumpkins, tomatoes, apples, strawberries, cherries, cantaloupes, raspberries, pears, plums, grapes, and watermelons.
Some of our dairy products are sold throughout much of the United States.
Fresh meat, chicken, and turkey are found throughout the county, along with meat products, cheese, and eggs. Lancaster is home to the world's largest manufacturer of hot dogs.
The area's jellies, jams, and relishes are famous, including those originally unique to the Amish. Chocolate is everyone's treat. The famous Hershey's chocolate company began in Lancaster and is now located just a short drive away. We still have a large chocolate manufacturer here and several smaller ones. Pretzels have been a popular snack food among Germans and German emigrants for many years. Not surprisingly, we have several pretzel and snack manufacturing plants. Last, but certainly not least, are the local baked goods: cakes, pies, cookies, "whoopie pies", and pastries. I know of no way to judge what part of the U.S. makes the best, but however you look at it ours are certainly among the best. So where would you like to start? Something to eat here or something to take home? Why not both? Click on one of the links below, or on the navigation bar, to see our recommendations.
