Amish furniture is
craftsmanship at it's best.

In recent years Amish furniture has become increasingly popular. Why, and why do they make it instead of farm? The answer to the first question is easy: the 'joy of work' is a fundamental part of Amish life, and that means setting and achieving high standards in all that they do. As a result their furniture is exceptionally well made, from its foundation to its finish.

The answer to the second question is more complex. The Amish love and cherish land and farming. But over the years their population in Lancaster has grown, in fact it has doubled over the past twenty years. But the land available for farms hasn't; there is now less farmland due its use for residential, commercial, and industrial purposes. And what land does become available has become much more expensive. So it's difficult for the growing Amish population to add more farms. The result is that they must find new occupations and many have in commerce, construction, and other fields that are consistent with their beliefs.

One result of that shift is high quality, locally manufactured furniture, Amish furniture. Among the numerous stores carrying it we recommend three. The first is Peaceful Valley Furniture. They have locations in Intercourse, Bird-In-Hand, and Strasburg, but Joan and I have only been to the one just west of Intercouse on Route 340. They offer both indoor and outdoor furniture in many styles at reasonable prices.

The second place we recommend is Gish's Furniture, also with three locations but only one of which is in Lancaster County, on Route 30 East. They offer more than fifty styles of heirloom quality furniture in a variety of finishes.

The third company we suggest is almost-amish.com. They do not have any retail locations but do all their business through their web site.

Although they aren't Amish furniture, we also recommend two other businesses well worth your consideration. The first is George's Woodcrafts ; on the western side of the county in Marietta. George's specializes in furniture made of solid walnut, oak, cherry and maple - both standard designs and custom made. The second is Kauffman's Handcrafted Clocks. Although they make clocks in many styles, their specialty is grandfather and grandmother clocks with German works. They are located on Route 23 in Ronks.
